I thought about trying a different machine, but it smells bad in there, and I didn't trust the other machines, so I cut my losses and drove to Sunshine Laundry in Grants Pass, where it all came out clean, and I could use front loaders!
There was gray stuff stuck on all the stuff that had been against the drum, not sure if it was from a previous load, or maybe it put so little water in that the soap powder didn't dissolve and wash out, but it wasn't usable. (it locks the lid during the cycle, so you can't see how much water it uses)
Clean and convenient
Both front loaders were broken, so I decided to just wash a part of my laundry in a top loader, picked the best looking one, and when I took the stuff out after the cycle was over, it was dirtier then when I put it in!
